Three hours after Kevin Harvick took the checkered flag in Sunday's Nextel Cup race, NASCAR changed the finishing order of the AMD at the Glen.
On the final lap of the race, Ryan Newman and Boris Said were battling for position heading in the area known as the inner loop or "bus stop." Said appeared to make contact with Newman, and while Newman recovered, Said went around the outside of the loop and continued on to the start/finish line. NASCAR penalized Newman 30 seconds, and he was shown in 31st with Said in sixth.
Several hours after the race, NASCAR reviewed the tapes and reversed the order of finish giving Newman the benefit of the doubt and penalizing Said 30 seconds for missing the loop. "Originally, we had thought that Newman hadn't stopped properly in the inner loop," NASCAR spokesperson Kerry Tharp said Monday. "But after reviewing the video postrace, we saw that he had been spun around and did not require a penalty. Thus, he was credited with the position he was in at the time of the finish (with no penalty) and that was eighth place."
Ron Fellows also was found guilty of passing the inner loop on the last lap and was given a 30-second penalty, dropping him from 10th to 32nd.
